The Internet Never Forgets
Understanding Your Digital Footprint
Have you ever posted something online and deleted it later? Maybe it was an old photo, a comment, or something you no longer wanted people to see. Deleting it might make it disappear from your profile, but that does not always mean it is completely gone from the internet.
Everything we do online can contribute to our digital footprint. This includes social media posts, comments, likes, online accounts, photos, searches, and even information collected by websites. Sometimes, other people may save or share content before it is deleted, making it difficult to completely control where it ends up.
Your digital footprint can matter in the future. Colleges, employers, and other organizations may sometimes look at publicly available information online. A post made in just a few seconds could potentially create an impression that lasts much longer.
This does not mean you should be afraid to use the internet. Instead, it means you should be thoughtful about what you share. Before posting, ask yourself: Would I be comfortable if this information became public or was still visible years from now?
The internet can be an amazing place to learn, connect, and express yourself—but every click leaves a trace. Think before you post, because even when something is deleted, the internet may not completely forget.
